Don Mueang: the low-cost airport in Bangkok that’s doing its best

July 31, 2017 update: Roadworks outside the terminal are to begin shortly, and traffic delays may make you think twice about choosing Don Mueang in the immediate future.

August 7 update: This post may be jinxed. Reports now are coming through of waits of more than four hours at Don Mueang Immigration. Seems it may be best avoided until they sort a few things out.

Here I am at Don Mueang, the old main Bangkok airport that now accommodates low cost carriers mainly flying Asian routes.

And it does that job very well.

Maybe I was lucky, or choosing a flight that leaves in the early afternoon on a Thursday was an inspired piece of planning.

Either way, I breezed through check-in (all self served with no bags to drop), security and immigration.

The facilities are a bit dated, but to this point everything is working well.

Sadly, I don’t have lounge access attached to my Air Asia flight to Phnom Penh, but there is Starbucks (and a lot of other familiar franchises).

And yes, I am using their free WiFi.

PS: Arriving back wasn’t so smooth. The delay at immigration was about 30 minutes, with an other 20 minutes in the taxi queue.
