Should ‘woke’ tourists boycott some destinations?

Not so long ago, some people were calling for a tourist boycott of Myanmar because it was a military dictatorship that subjugated its people. We should, many argued, deprive them of tourist income until political change occurs.

Well, political change did come, and the country now ostensibly has a  civilian government. But the military is still all-powerful, and Myanmar still has a huge human rights problem. So, what to do?

What to do about expats behaving badly?

Have you heard the one about the Ugly Australian abroad? I was reminded of this when a friend told me that he could never live in Thailand because of the way the expatriate community behaves.

Having spent a lot of time in Thailand — and in other places where expats dwell — I have to say that I understand what he means. And it’s not just Aussies who are behaving badly.

July 31, 2017 update: Roadworks outside the terminal are to begin shortly, and traffic delays may make you think twice about choosing Don Mueang in the immediate future.

August 7 update: This post may be jinxed. Reports now are coming through of waits of more than four hours at Don Mueang Immigration. Seems it may be best avoided until they sort a few things out.
