A thought that came to my whilst stirring in my seat one night: On average, cinema seats seem to be far more comfortable than live theatre seats, and this could be a signifcant factor in attendance figures. Now I know it all comes down to money, and subsidised theatres are in a perilous financial situation compared to commercial cinemas. Perhaps the concept of "Gold Class" live theatres, with big comfy reclining lounge chairs, would fly - if not in Brisbane, where audiences are relatively small, then in London or New York.
