Fancy your own cruise ship?

I recently wrote about the list price of the Airbus fleet. So, it seems only fair that I also write about the cost of cruise ships, in case you are thinking of buying one.

Now, buying a new ship is a bit different to buying a plane — they have to be custom built, you can’t get them off the rack, as it were. But you are still going to have to have fairly deep pockets.

I’m using as my guide here a recent story in The Telegraph which notes that the most expensive cruise ship ever built is Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas, which had a price tag of $1.4 billion when it was built in 2009.

Of course, Royal Caribbean and others are building bigger and better ships all the time, so you can expect the price to increase.

If you’re looking at a lower price range, the Norwegian Epic cost $1.2 billion, Royal Caribbean’s Independence of the Seas cost about $800 million, the Queen Mary 2 $900 million, and the Disney Fantasy $950 million.

Of course, none of these ships is actually for sale (as far as I know), but there is a place where you can buy a used cruise ship if you really want one and can afford it.
