Food for thought

I’m pretty much an omnivore, but I am sensitive to other people’s dietary requirements. And I feel for those with diet restrictions when they are travelling.

So, it’s great to note that there are organisations that do the research and spread the word on the web so these people know where to go to get a good meal.

One of them is PETA which, while not photographing naked celebrities, compiles a list of vegan eateries to guide their members and fellow travellers.

It has just released a guideĀ for the UK, and it can be found online here. It includes both 100 per cent vegan establishments and those that have vegan options as part of a broader menu.

The release prompted me to seek out some other online lists for people with specific requirements. Please note that I don’t endorse any of the following, but they appear to be from genuine sources. (If not, please let me know and I’ll make the appropriate adjustments.

Atkins (low carb): The Atkins website has some general advice here.

Dairy-free: This site recommends restaurants in US, Canada and worldwide.

Gluten-free: The Travel the World with Kim blog has recommendations from around the world for celiacs and others who avoid gluten in their diet.

Halal: Zabihah claims to be the world’s largest guide,

Kosher: There’s a searchable database at Totally Jewish Travel.

Low-fat: This site has some general advice about low-fat eatinv-out options.

Vegetarian/ vegan: There’s a searchable database at the Happy Cow website.
