Travel hacks’ travel hacks

The internet is undoubtedly the best first destination for would-be travellers. But with so much advice online — some of it contradictory — where do you go?

I’m biased because of my profession, but I always like to look at the online version of reputable newspapers’ travel pages for the advice of my fellow journalists and travel writers.

One article I’d shamelessly recommend is this one in the UAE newspaper The National, because it collates tips from a bunch of journalists that includes me.

In part, I extol the virtues of shopping around for airfares. Here’s an excerpt:

Brett Debritz … said that another fare-saving trip is to go segment by segment, choosing different airlines according to price

“The flight will take you longer, but the savings can be substantial. For example, I’m flying to Brisbane, Australia, in segments, comprising Oman Air from Abu Dhabi to Bangkok, via Muscat, and Qantas / Emirates return Bangkok to Brisbane, via Sydney. The total flight and layover time is longer, but I’m having a few days in Thailand as a bonus, and still paying less than I would to fly direct to Brisbane. There’s a new website called Matrix that can help you find these connecting flights.”

I also recommend beginning your trip in a place other than the home base of the airline you are using.
